A photo of the Supertrees of Singapore's Gardens by the Bay with a view of the city in the background

Gardens By The Bay

Innovation can also be Entertaining

Lights, Music, Action! …ah, and Green Energy 😉

How can you marry nature and technology? …and what if you add a touch of showbiz in the relationship!

Those who know me, understand how much I love a good show. But that wasn’t what first attracted me to Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.

The dome geometry of the conservatories and the engineering that made them possible fascinates me. Designed in 2006 by WilkinsonEyre architects, it has been in my bucket list for some time.

The Gardens have since become the symbol of Singapore in its ambition to become a “City in a Garden”. Built on reclaimed land by the port, they cover a vast area displaying a rich variety of species.

Next to the main conservatories, the Supertrees are one of the key showpieces. They resemble man-made living organisms: vertical ecosystems that collect solar energy, harvest rainwater, even conceal ventilation ducts for the conservatories next door.

But above all that the trees create a space that inspires curiosity and excitement. They welcome the visitors to get close and examine their bones - where nature and technology are intertwined. A walkway, suspended between them, allows visitors to experience the gardens from a higher elevation.

In the evening, the trees take centre stage in a show of dancing light. We joined a small crowd and laid under the tree canopies after sunset. As the tropical  temperatures started to subside the trees slowly came to life with a synchronised light show was accompanied by music from different genres.

There were no LED screens or 3D special effects. Just pure choreography of colour and music.

Spectacular in its simplicity.
